BSA 204 W16 : Devil's Hole Goes Forth

Introduction:

The movie opens with shaky footage of a camera being focused on the main character, he instructs the clumsy assistant on how to use it.

This is inter-cut with opening credits.

The frame eventually rests on Amblin as he introduced himself, calling himself an ambitious young documentary filmmaker based out of invercargill, outlining that he is going to go find the mysteries of the devil's hole.

Tane chuckles at this last line and Amblin is offended, he tells him not to snicker its serious. Tane insists that the name is a bit funny, Amblin says there's nothing funny about it, people died here. He says its a serious topic. Tane says they shouldnt have given it such a funny name, Amblin tells him to shut up and film, this is both of their ticket outta this shit hole of a town. Tane says it really isnt that bad, amblin says this documentary is their ticket to riches and fame. that he doesnt know what hes talking about and just operate the camera, Tane says he's not very good at it and asks why Amblin cant do it, he obviously knows how to use it. Amblin says that he has to be in front of the camera, you dont see werner herzog or michael mann hide behind it.Tane says he doesnt know who those people are, Amblin explains to him that theatricality and drama is important and Tane cant do it so he has to.

Stampeding into the Bush:

The two walk through the bush and Amblin is trying to get his lines right to tell of the great tragedies that occurred in the devil's hole

Things are not what they seem...

They find condoms...a lot of condoms.

The first scene ends with Amblin explaining how theatricality is important and outlining how a documentary has to add more to whats already there, they walk off into the bush. During the walk Amblin does a speech talking about the past drowning victims and how there were signs of something more sinister present, but his speech keeps get cut short by Tane's interruptions and claims that its a local rapist. Amblin ensures him its not, the autopsies revealed harm to the bodies, but not of a sexual nature and no semen present, Tane is not convinced (the devil of the title is a rapist, who uses condoms to not get semen anywhere and who has such a small penis that there would be no signs of harm to the sexual organs). This is interspersed with Tane's sexual innuendos and puns. Amblin states he is leading up to a much more important message and theory about the murders being a result of a war on water right, to which Tane disagrees, saying no one really cares about all that, Amblin ensures him everyone cares, especially the maori people.

They meet a local bush man (Jean's character from Matthew's film) and interview him about the devil's hole, he seems to think the same things to be true about the devils hole, with it being a local rapists' doing, him and Tane get along well but Amblin is frustrated by their foolery, they do however get a clue that the devil's hole is not linked to the same place they always thought, it instead leads to a small enclave that many people don't know about, he points the way and they chase the story.

They get to the secret area and find themselves surrounded by condom wrapper and shit. Tane is convinced that its the rapists dungeon but Amblin hits a low point feeling like its just a sex den for homeless people and drunk teens and that there is no mystery in their shitty little town.

But then they start being stalked by someone and are attacked by the serial rapist, who tane refers to as the devil.

They are almost raped but kill the fucker.

Amblin has to delete the footage which have now become valuable to cover up their crime.

Matthew made this amazing image in his photo class:

Could this be the devil?

The movie is kinda like District 9 I guess with it transitioning from found-footage to traditionally shot drama.
